Paisley Pattern & Toile Fabric

Paisley is the name given to the twisted tear-drop pattern printed onto a variety of fabrics. The origin of the design comes from Persia or India, however, in the UK it's the distinctive pattern that was produced in the town of Paisley, Scotland.

Toile is the French name for the linen cloth or painting canvas which was introduced into the UK in the 12th century. Toile is also the name given to a test garment which was typically made from the same cloth, in the US they're often called muslins.

Toile de Jouy is the gorgeous cloth associated with French landscapes which depict tranquil scenes of yesteryear. This fabric usually has a creamy background with the Toile de Jouy repeat pattern in blue or red, although green and browns are also available. It's used for soft furnishings such as drapes and curtains and and is ideal for upholstery projects.
